Immortality, also called Eternal Life, is the concept of living in physical or spiritual form for an infinite length of time without dying. A subset of this is Eternal Youth, which allows for exemption from natural death such as from old age or disease, as well as halting age altogether. There are several methods in the Batman Universe which can be sought after in order to become immortal, the most common being to use the chemical Dionesium.
Methods of gaining immortality[]
Characters who are immortal[]
Eternal Life[]
- Vandal Savage: The very first mortal creature to come into contact with Dionesium and the man who would eventually go on to spread the legend of immortality to the world.
Partial Immortality[]
- Ra's al Ghul: The Demon that discovered a corrupted form of Dionesium and renamed it the Lazarus Pits. Unlike Vandal Savage, who came into contact with Dionesium in its purest form, Ra's did not completely receive Eternal Life and instead is forced to keep returning to the Pits in order to extend his own life for centuries. It would eventually take a toll on his sanity.
- The Joker: Claimed to use Dionesium to revive himself throughout history. Like Ra's al Ghul, he requires repeated trips to the pools in order to sustain himself.

Drawbacks[]
Even if one is immortal they are still susceptible to being trapped in a place where they cannot escape, be it locked and buried in a coffin, dimension, etc. In the case of gaining eternal youth, they also are still susceptible to the unnatural taking of life such as murder or suicide.
